I just received my new work laptop ( Pro M3, ~€2000) just to discover that it does not support dual-monitor output despite having multiple video ports.

For a feature that even the cheapest laptops (and older MacBooks) have had for years, Apple now asks you to buy the MacBook Pro M3 Pro (€2500) or M3 Max (€4000).

This is essentially €2000 . Not so "pro" after all.

@tuxdevices Remember this has been in Apple's DNA since the first time Jobs took over.

https://www.folklore.org/Diagnostic_Port.html

"But once again, Steve Jobs objected, because he didn't like the idea of customers mucking with the innards of their computer. He would also rather have them buy a new 512K Mac instead of them buying more RAM from a third-party."

Why hackers buy Apple kit (since the Apple II) I do not understand.

@tuxdevices I literally found out the same thing last week with my work laptop! Also a Pro M3, it's ridiculous.

I could choose my own laptop configuration as long as it was a Macbook (need to build iOS apps) and I've specifically chosen the Pro to get a proper HDMI port, only to realize this issue way later.

I'm going to replace my personal laptop and am probably going to get a #framework, they show that it is possible to do it right!

@tuxdevices I think you got the M3 Air? That's around $2K USD (not sure about Euros). And it can do 1 external display.

MacBook Pro should be able to do 2 external displays, especially with the M3 Pro chip. Also should be able to close the lid and not put it to sleep since it has active cooling. I don't think MacBook Air can cool with the lid closed.

@CerebralHawks it's definitely a MacBook Pro M3 and not an Air M3... which is confusingly is also not a MacBook Pro M3 Pro

@tuxdevices
That is absurd. I can not believe it... I figured maybe a dongle, but not at all?

Even my objectively awful GeoBook-120 I paid $120US for three years ago on an Intel N3450 would do up to four displays if there were more video out ports because that is what the chipset limit is.

Can you tell if this is an OS-level lock that can get patched, or is it lower like firmware?

@Brett_E_Carlock apparently the M3 chip doesn't have the hardware for it

vegos_f06,

@tuxdevices Why Apple at all? Apple ist capitalism!

@tuxdevices I agree this is stupid but it’s like that since the M1 years ago. Also I thought the new m3 can do 2 displays when the lid is closed? pretty sure I read about it a few weeks ago…
