On the topic of #Affinity and #Canva, there is a new statement out today. Registered users probably got the email as well.

For now, I suggest we extend the Affinity team our continued support and love, while holding them to their pledge. They have done right by the graphics community this far, and deserve the benefit of doubt. We'll be watching them closely.

I would have been more at ease if it was Affinity buying Canva though 🙂

carondolet,

@airwhale Was this graphic made yesterday AFTER the community responded unhappily to the news? I mean, I received this email as well and they are saying the right things, but Canva is running the ship here, not Affinity. So I’ll hope for the best like you say, but won’t be surprised if things change in a year or so. At this point, trusting tech companies is a fool’s game.

@carondolet

I’m not on their communications team, so can't telly when this was made. I guess the team had a pretty good hunch about what the user reaction was going to be, so probably had this ready to go, I recon.

Hoping the folks at Canva are smart enough to realise that they bought the HIGH-END professional toolset for designers to complement their low-end offering aimed at business users / consumers. They'd be smart to let Affinity run that part of the business.

carondolet,

@airwhale That’s fair, they do seem like smart people who can predict how their community will react.

And I completely agree that it would be smart business to let Affinity do their thing, I truly hope that happens!

bowreality,

@carondolet @airwhale Not sure if I agree. The message yesterday and the video were so bad it sent the community in a tail spin. I doubt they were predicting the backlash (hence not smart). Otherwise they would have sent today’s statement in the message yesterday. This is purely a reaction to the outcry yesterday. Can’t say I believe them. Had they come out with that yesterday in the initial message maybe … now? Ehhh

@bowreality @carondolet

Yeah, you might be right of course... just trying to keep a positive outlook for as long as I can, maybe :)

@airwhale remember how in September 16, 2022, they said nobody would be buying out affinity?

Now, let's take note of how they are saying they will keep honouring lifetime licenses and keep offering them... And start a 18 month timer.

@zanagb

Yeah, as I said, let's keep our eyes on them. I hope for the best, but will not be overly surprised to see the worst. I'm just a very happy user of their great products, and they have not screwed me over. Yet…

Predictions are really hard, especially when they are about the future :)

@airwhale For me, I must be extra cynical about the situation. Specially when they made v2 specifically as an UWP app with the express purpose of breaking Wine users.

For the last few updates, everything bad that could've happened, has happened.

But yes. The future will tell. Trust is eroded to the point I won't use or recommend the software. But for current users I hope I have to eat my own words.

@zanagb

Oh, sorry to hear. Wasn't aware the Wine support broke.

I was pretty shaken yesterday myself, so guess I’m trying to talk myself down a bit too :)
