@TheConversationUS@blackmastodon using woke as a pejorative is awesome because it immediately tells me all I need to know about them as a person and I can save my time and mental health by not having any further interactions with them ever.
@Beeks@TheConversationUS@blackmastodon Plenty of fairly middle of the road people (mostly white, but also religious conservative POC, catholics, asians) get pulled into culture war beliefs that the left are full of politically correct culture warriors to want to force changes in language and culture. It's MLK's concern about the white moderate and their desire for stability. And it works quite well, or the right wouldn't keep doing it. The answer is engagement, not withdrawal.
@Beeks@TheConversationUS@blackmastodon Ask people to define woke. Tell them the original definition and point out the realities of structural racism. Engage, find common ground and push on their empathy. POC don't have a lot of family members who have a struggle seeing which political party is taking the country in a bad direction. Us white folks do. Too many believe the GOP stands for fiscal conservatism, despite disastrous tax policies, for instance.
@jonathanpeterson@TheConversationUS@blackmastodon for sure if you're in a position of influence it's morally imperative to use it for good. I'm just never in such a position these days so when I do run across a jackwagon online I save my energy and move along.
@Beeks@TheConversationUS@blackmastodon no question, online culture wars are a womtf. I'll correct an obvious misstatement of fact and link to actual news. Happens all the time on reddit, when MAGAs living in rural Georgia want to talk about explosions in violent crime, for instance.
