Many autistic children thrive on routine and predictability, which can make vacations challenging for them. Here's a story from USA Today with tips on how to plan a trip, choose an airline that provides accommodations for autistic children, and details on what to expect from an autism-certified resort.

@kkffoo and others highlighted to us that the puzzle piece originally used to illustrate this story is an offensive analogy to some autistic people. Here is an explanation as to why. The publication has now changed the image in response to this feedback. Thank you all.

@arcadetoken Thanks so much for pointing this out. We have emailed the publication to highlight this issue and made an amendment to our post as well. Let us know if you think this is is sufficient as we'd be happy to delete the post, but wondered if it would be better to leave it up in order to inform people of why it's offensive.

@arcadetoken Of course — lots of people getting a necessary education today and we're so grateful!

@CultureDesk I wonder why the author chose that puzzle piece heart as one of the images? Maybe she doesn't know how offensive this is to some autistic people? @actuallyautistic

@kkffoo @actuallyautistic. Oh dear! We doubt the author chose the image as it's usually an editor at the publication. We will email them now, mention this to them and share this article. https://theabilitytoolbox.com/autism-puzzle-piece-alternative/

Thanks for bringing it to our attention — it's not something we were aware of. We will add a note to the posting as well.

@JorreVan Definitely a very good point, though some of the recommendations in the piece are applicable to all kinds of vacation!
