People who have or know someone who has a ...where do you or they use it most? I'm trying to understand better where most people are using it.

terrehbyte,
@terrehbyte@sakurajima.moe avatar

@jimmyb Definitely at work on a break or on a couch w/ friends/family

It's also my go-to on long transit trips like planes and inter-city buses/trains, but I'm not riding those very often haha

3v4n,

@jimmyb Share ROMS folder from NAS and point Emudeck at it. Installed Diablo 4 and WoW and they both play great. Thing can do it all!

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@3v4n Ooooooh, WoW would be kind of fun to play on the go haha FOR THE HORDE! 😂

3v4n,

@jimmyb kek, it is

awoodland,

@jimmyb I use mine mostly when travelling. Makes commuting fun again.

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@awoodland That seems to be a common place, on the train and such when traveling. I thought it might be bothersome to lug around but I guess tossing it in your backpack or similar isn't too bad!

awoodland,

@jimmyb the standard carry case you get with it comfortably fits inside a standard backpack with a laptop and lunchbox. Lots of longer distance planes/trains have AC power at the seat as standard these days too which helps with the AAA gameplay time.

provomeister, (edited )

@jimmyb I work from home, so I try to stay as far as possible from my desktop when gaming at night. I'm mostly using it on the bed or the couch, and a few times on car rides.

The form factor is also a great way to enjoy simpler games such as indies or retros. I've grown quite a big Steam library over the last 10+ years, so the Steam Deck is good to slowly chip at it (even if I'm buying more games to play them on it... I've accepted that I won't ever complete my backlog 😆)

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@provomeister I think I need to be like you and just accept I'll never complete my backlog of games 🤣

The bed or couch seems like a great place to get cozy and play some games ☺️

provomeister,

@jimmyb It does make it easier on my mind knowing I'll never see the end of it haha 😅 Otherwise, gaming become a chore...

Exactly, SD made me play cozy games such as A Short Hike and Lil Gator Game. I would have never played them on my desktop! 🙂

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@provomeister Ooooooh boy, I've been meaning to play A Short Hike!

provomeister,

@jimmyb You won't regret for sure! It's quite short as the title suggest but I've really appreciated my time with it. I still need to go back at it to get all achievements 🙂

@jimmyb couch, bed, bathroom, in the car, on the plane. It's great for hanging with the wife in the living room and not taking up the TV when she'd rather be watching a show.

My gaming PC usage has probably dropped 90% since I got the deck right after it launched. I really only use it when I want to play multiplayer games with my gaming group, but that's pretty rare these days, unfortunately.

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@rodhlann Oh wow, everywhere! I'm kind of a single player gamer so it sounds like a win haha

rodhlann,
rodhlann avatar

@jimmyb oh yeah if you're not playing online games I think the steam deck is a no brainer

wildrikku,
@wildrikku@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jimmyb For gaming, currently, on trains. I use it as my normal PC so it is always docked at home running almost all day but regarding gaming, currently, changes every now and then, I mostly play on the Steam Deck when traveling on train and on my big gaming PC when at home (different games).

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@wildrikku Do you find it bothersome to lug around when out and about? You must have something other than the default OS installed?

wildrikku,
@wildrikku@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jimmyb I find it annoying that the case has no compartment for the power supply, but other than that, no. And I use the default OS. I used a derivate of Arch Linux before so it wasn't much of a change. The problems with custom software on SteamOS updates also got less.

jimmyb,
@jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

@wildrikku Ah okay! I agree, it is a bit annoying there's no place for the power supply in the case but if I was to bring it around I'd probably put it in my backpack.

wildrikku,
@wildrikku@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@jimmyb Yeah, that's what I do, too. I put the case in my backpack anyway. From that perspective it even sometimes makes sense to have the power supply separate because with a compartment for the power supply in the case, the case would become even larger. I just hope the power supply can take some stress.

Fanfalla,
@Fanfalla@meow.social avatar

@jimmyb I find myself mostly playing at home on the couch. :3 I do like the carrying case though.

    @ivorybear Ah yeah, that completely makes sense! I'll have to look into that case.

    Ugh, I definitely didn't do my research well enough. I thought a 512GB was the largest size drive that would work 🤦🏼‍♂️

    bit,

    @jimmyb usually when it’s a nice day out i’ll play on it outside in a hammock

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @bit Oh that sounds perfect!

    CGillanders,

    @jimmyb Most of the time I’m using it on the sofa streaming a game from the bigger gaming pc using steam link. It’s just handy sometimes to not have to go sit elsewhere and dedicate myself to gaming - with the #steamdeck I can pick up and put down gaming in a much more casual way.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @CGillanders That seems to be the consensus for folks who do have a gaming PC at home as well. You make some very good points! ☺️

    Tubulous,

    @jimmyb
    On a sofa or comfortable chair. I also bring it when I travel. I have a gaming PC, but sometimes I like to relax with a game w/o having to sit at my desk or monopolizing the family TV.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @Tubulous You don't find that it's too much to lug around? On the sofa or a comfy chair sounds perfect though!

    Tubulous,

    @jimmyb No not at all, actually. Like others have mentioned, I bring my day pack with tech most places anyway. One thing to note - the case it comes with includes space for the USB-C power/charge adapter. Since all of my devices are USB-C, when I bring my steamdeck, I can leave other cables / chargers at home.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @Tubulous Yeah, you're right. That seems to be the consensus. It's not really bothersome to bring around. Someone also mentioned a bit of a smaller case that's available too.

    ckempo,

    @jimmyb in bed! Seriously, when we retire for the night, I often sit in bed and game for an hour or two whilst my wife reads or browses socials.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @ckempo That seems like a common answer! I appreciate you reaching out! ☺️

    chirpbirb,
    @chirpbirb@meow.social avatar

    @jimmyb when i’m home i use it as an htpc for watching youtube. but otherwise, i’ve got it to occupy my hands playing an indie game that’s grabbed my interest during downtimes at work. i also recently brought mine to a buffalo wild wings and @Fanfalla and i played a few rounds of #StreetFighter6 before our wings got to the table. it’s really versatile, honestly!

    #videogames #steamdeck #steam

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @chirpbirb @Fanfalla You don't find it bothersome to lug around?

    At work during break sounds perfect though!

    chirpbirb,
    @chirpbirb@meow.social avatar

    @jimmyb @Fanfalla the carrying case it comes with makes it really easy to toss in a backpack or messenger bag. maybe it’s just me, but i don’t mind carrying it around. i’m also used to lugging a lot of tech with me, though.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @chirpbirb Haha fair enough. I really appreciate you reaching out! ☺️

    danielstucke,
    @danielstucke@mas.to avatar

    @jimmyb 95% sofa

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @danielstucke Do you have a gaming PC at home too?

    danielstucke,
    @danielstucke@mas.to avatar

    @jimmyb We do. My some uses it a lot. I rarely do now. Might do if something AAA comes out but gaming time tends to be evenings and I can play SteamDeck whilst half watch tv and spending time with my wife so the pc barely gets a look in.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @danielstucke Gotcha, that makes sense. Might even be more comfortable on that sofa too 😝

    coffeecat,

    @jimmyb I use mine most of the time hanging out in my backyard or while out and about. I'll sometimes use it hooked up to my tv, but I usually use my desktop PC or PlayStation while inside at home.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @coffeecat Do you find it annoying or bothersome to lug it around when you're out and about?

    Out in the backyard sounds good though!

    coffeecat,

    @jimmyb Just a bit as it's kind of big. I usually just take it with me when I'm going somewhere that I'm expecting to have some downtime or going on a trip, so I'm usually not carrying it around too long. If I took it with me everyday, I think I'd bring it in a backpack or something.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @coffeecat Yeah, that's what I was thinking too, toss it in a backpack.

    doomtrain5,

    @jimmyb docked, connected to a TV. I got it as a cheap(er) gaming PC

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @doomtrain5 Is it safe to say you also have a gaming PC too?

    doomtrain5,

    @jimmyb I have a PC but not for gaming specifically, I typically use it as my streaming middle-man. The specs aren't really good enough for modern games. I do my best with the Steam Deck or hope the game is on PS5

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @doomtrain5 Gotcha! That makes sense. So far it seems like most folks have it hooked up to their TVs.

    mrdiamondj,

    @jimmyb Hooked up to my TV using their dock.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @mrdiamondj Do you have a gaming PC at home too?

    mrdiamondj,

    @jimmyb Nope! SteamDeck is a (sorta) replacement for that. I've considered getting one but it'd be a pure luxury.

    jimmyb,
    @jimmyb@selfhosted.cafe avatar

    @mrdiamondj Ok that makes sense! I really appreciate you reaching out! ☺️

    mrdiamondj,

    @jimmyb No problem!
