Indoor Air Quality: Wildfire Smoke & Cooking

With wildfire smoke season here, we all need to think about air quality inside where we spend most of our time. This article provides multiple examples measuring the air quality inside my home from wildfire smoke and cooking.

The web version of this article with nice table of contents and easy to share with others can be found here ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x0yA0ebo8HkNYCps_CZPqGE0-My_4toLiGSR9M-D7-w/edit?usp=sharing ).

Graph of PM 2.5 Wildfire Smoke Pollution Levels Inside & Outside House with significantly higher levels of PM outside and in garage, and higher levels of PM in unfinished sections of basement with very little PM in finished rooms and those with HEPA filters.
Graph from co2.click portal showing a massive spike in particulate matter (PM) levels past 50 ug/m3 on Christmas Eve. More info at: https://co2.click/

@jeffgilchrist Nice article. These sensors with the cloud data collection are so useful - I constantly generate graphs as you've shown.

What about tvoc? This number can be, seemingly, alarmingly high usually when we're cooking. I've tended to ignore it because it fluctuates so drastically. When should I be concerned about the tvoc level?

@human3500 On the IAQ monitors that I use the VOC value is an index which indicates if TVOC is steady, increasing or decreasing but it doesn't give you a specific measurement value like CO2/PPM and you don't know the contents so it is really hard to tell. If I go for a walk outside and then come back in and and walk by the sensor it will shoot up for a walk because we must have brought something back from outside.

@jeffgilchrist I have the model E lite. I wonder if it's the same.

@human3500 I believe it is the same. I think the main difference with the E and E-lite is the PM sensor but everything else is the same.
