@matt I’ll also note philosophically that we’re big preservation nerds here, and huge fans of Internet Archive, and we have been thinking about this kind of stuff from the beginning. No concrete plans to reveal but it’s at least in our brains! 🙌
@matt We definitely hope not to fade away, but we also know that nothing is ever guaranteed! 🙂 If we needed to, we'd always do our best to help archive and maintain the Playdate legacy.
@matt Not from Panic, but I can answer your final question: the games are stored entirely locally on the Playdate, so even if Panic goes bankrupt tomorrow you still get to keep playing them as-is. You might even be able to copy them off the device to make a backup.
Panic takes a 25% cut of Catalog sales, if memory serves. But you're not limited to their store! There are plenty more games to be had for free or cheap on sites like itch.io, which you can sideload onto the device through USB.
