#30DayMapChallenge 🗺️ Day 2️⃣8️⃣: Is this a chart or a map? 📊

Initially I thought of cheekily mapping a set of points on a scatter plot with their longitudes and latitudes as the plot’s two variables plus either the point size or color as an additional 1 or 2 variables.

But I settled with this neat Nightingale/wind/polar/rose chart showing the most distant mainland communes of France from Paris in fixed intervals of bearing. As you can see, the chart shape kinda still looks like #France 🇫🇷. 😅

For this map, I extracted the communes data as JSON from #Wikidata via the Wikidata Query Service, then coded up a JavaScript web app that does the analysis for me and draws the chart as SVG. Crucially, the important variable I control is how many pie slices I want to display. Attached here is a sample chart showing 30 communes/pie slices.

The less the number of slices, the more “charty” the image becomes while the more slices the more “mappy” it becomes. 😉

So is this a chart or a map?
