I've been playing #EliteDangerous lately, and they just announced a new update that mentions you can buy a new ship to play in the game, soon, rather than wait for it to be generally available later. That hints that they'll shift to charging money directly for ships to play.
That bothers me a little. What bothers me more is fans announcing how happy they are to pay more money to continue playing the game.
@foolishowl man, I already have issues with how they turned the grind up intensely to basically force you to buy the new expansion if you didn't want it to be a second day job to just upgrade enough to fight basic pirates (It completely killed combat in the game for me :/), but going full star citizen on it is unacceptable (I know it was probably tempting them the whole time watching star citizen rake in 100x their profits with 1% of the work..but i hoped they were better than that...)
