selea,

Is there any "smartplug" that does'nt require a cloud-service or an app in order to monitor electricity consumption and more?

Ideally, something that is open by default and can sent statistics over MQTT or similar

Here is a shop that sells devices pre-flashed with Tasmota. It may work for what you are looking for. They have worked with the people on the Self Hosted podcast with @ironicbadger https://cloudfree.shop/product-category/smart-plugs/

@selea https://www.mylocalbytes.com/products/smart-plug-pm these run Tasmota or ESPhome by default, but you could flash them with whatever you want.

Advantage of sticking with esphome is that it can be easily configured to push to MQTT, or Home Assistant.

I have two (which were originally Tasmota but I flashed ESPhome) and they are perfect. They are available for EU or UK sockets.

I am saving all these links that I am getting at the moment!
Really happy that there is great open alternatives!

galaxis,

@selea I'm using several Shelly Plug S with their Home Assistant integration that's built on CoIoT (but they can also do MQTT). They're running on 2.4GHz Wifi.

I assume it's basically the same hardware as the Nous plugs or others that look similar, but Shelly has their own software (that optionally ties into their cloud stuff).

Shelly Plug S web interface, zoomed way out so it's possible to see the advanced options with an "Enable MQTT" button (which is disabled in my setup).

selea,

@galaxis

Does shelly have MQTT as default?

galaxis,

@selea No, it's off by default and has to be enabled on the web interface after connecting to a Wifi network.

(Well technically you can enable MQTT before, as initial configuration and joining an existing Wifi is done by connecting to a default hotspot network generated by the plug.)

selea,

@galaxis

Thats completely fine thou, I just want to have support for it.

Looks like Shelly is offering a solid lineup of plugs, might consider the Pro lineup since I am thinking about installing a new fault breaker

selea,

Got so many answers! Thank you very much!
Looks like Tasmota is what I want here. :)

hoppaz,

@selea
You can look for plugs which are allow to replace firmware by tasmota. https://tasmota.github.io/docs/

Some of those devices can be upgraded using tuya-convert without touching the hardware.

selea,

@hoppaz

Thanks!

Looks like the one plug that I own is using the realtek controller....

bummer

hoppaz,

@selea
I use them with home assistant using mqtt.

I knew this rang a bell. I don't know which devices are supported, but I believe Shelly smart plugs are on that list.

@selea You want to control it remotely? The IKEA Trädfri line uses zigbee, so no internet required.

selea,

@whynothugo

Yeah I am using that already, but I can't measure power usage on that thing :(

jahanson,

@selea SwitchBot Smart Plug Mini 15A,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09YV2L3MN?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share Flash with Tasmota and use MQTT

momo,

@selea
Only thing that immediately comes out of my head is Shelly. It's not a plug thou but a module you wire behind your socket or light switch. It can be controlled via App or MQTT and there are Tasmota builds available if desired.

It's probably not what you're looking for but it can be interesting, too. And with knowledge you can build your own smart socket with it of course.

@selea My knee-jerk response is to say “no” because part of the point of this is to 1) lock you into the vendor’s cloud service and 2) collect your information so it can be monetized, somehow.

Making it open so you can roll your own monitoring solution would not let them monetize.

You might be able to find such a plug but not from an IoT vendor it would be from a speciality IT equipment/hardware engineering studio.

selea,

@MisuseCase

That is why I asked here, usually there is always someone that knows something about this here :)

@selea I don’t know a lot about these kinds of places but maybe look at seeed studio (no that’s not a typo). They make a lot of interesting hardware that you can configure however you like.

They’re in China if that sort of thing matters to you.

There seems to be plenty of alternatives :)
