When I was in grade four and living in Musgrave Harbour, Newfoundland, the librarian wouldn’t let me read fiction books they deemed above my reading level. At home, I was reading stuff like Robinson Crusoe, but at school I could only sign out stuff like Little Miss Sunshine or Mr Happy books. Little-kid picture books got old, fast. I wanted to read Dick Francis murder mysteries because they had horses on the cover. The librarian vetoed it. They told me I could sign out any nonfiction books, though. So I signed out a book on dog breeding. One day, two dogs were humping outside the classroom window. Until the teacher made us come back to our seats, I gave a graphic play-by-play telling all the other kids what was going on with dog penis and dog vagina when the dogs stood ass too ass.
