Look Inside Huawei Mate 60 Pro Phone Powered by Made-in-China Chip

> #Huawei Technologies Co. and #China’s top chipmaker have built an advanced 7-nanometer processor to power its latest smartphone, a sign Beijing is making early progress in a nationwide push to circumvent US efforts to contain its ascent.

@raymondpert Joe Biden was first elected as a senator when Chairman Mao was still alive. It's pretty clear that he's struggling to update his views on #China, and their capabilities to respond to his ham-fisted attempts at containment.

@raymondpert I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out they're slightly overselling the capabilities of this first generation of chips, but even allowing for that the speed of the adaptation is pretty impressive indeed.

this is bad news for US chipmakers according to Washington Post: https://archive.ph/Bh4fc

    > “It starts a downward spiral in ability, to not be competitive with the rest of the world,” said an industry executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

how can the US squander a lead it had and it could have held on to if it only kept supplying the chips? blind nationalism? over confidence? sinophobia?

@WahbAllat Possibly all of those things I guess, plus having someone in charge whose political career started around the same time as the Unix Epoch.

@WahbAllat Exactly. Unfortunely for him the 2020s PRC is not at all like the 1980s Soviet Union, so he's basically navigating unknown territory with the confidence of a man who thinks he has all the maps.

@failedLyndonLaRouchite @raymondpert Right, it's just flawed thinking that you can "bring back" things like chip manufacturing, while also reducing inflation. If you think the former is a good idea (something I don't necessarily disagree with), then you can only do that if you accept it will raise prices.
