lycophidion,

I was privileged to spend a couple of weeks two regions in Cuba to observe, photograph and learn about birds and other fauna: la Ciénaga de Zapata and the Valle de Viñales. The first is a 450 sq km mangal-salt marsh and subtropical deciduous forest that is home to large number of endemics. The second was a dry open woodland and agricultural area, dominated by large exposed limestone mounds called mojotes, which offer a variety of habitats to many endemic and unique species. Eons old, the mojotes are important fossil sites and erosion of some has left a myriad of caves and (inaccessible) hollow centers with their own unique humid woodland assemblages. Here are a few shots of the respective terrains. Fauna follows. It is important to point out that the U.S. blockade has not only subjected the Cuban people to starvation, but has important negative consequences for Cuba's outstanding biodiversity.
