#Banking deserts are expanding, with an annual total of 600 branch closures expected by the end of 2023 & around 60% of the branch network from 2015 now closed.
We are assured that banking hubs will pick up the slack & the Govt. has required (though with no clear enforcement mechanism) 95% of customers to have access to cash within three miles.
The banks are doing well out of the move to online/cashless banking; this change is not a reflection of customer behaviour, its driven by profiteering!
@ChrisMayLA6 will that access to cash be via pay-to-use cash machines so people in more deprived areas have to pay £1.50 to withdraw £20 of their own money? It was a cause for significant celebration when a free machine appeared in my little area-of-multiple-deprivation town.
I also suspect that rich folk have zero idea how useless something 3 miles away is when it costs too much to get there.
I think the idea is community banking hubs, but as with all such declaratory politics from the #Tories, this may collapse down to 'you can drive to an ATM, what's your problem?'
@ChrisMayLA6 we used to have something like that. Every high street and every village had a place you could go to do a whole range of life admin jobs. They were staffed by friendly, knowledgeable people and they were all run as a public service. I think we used to call them post offices.
