An RNC member is trying to stop the party from paying Donald Trump's legal bills (apnews.com)

At least one member of the Republican National Committee is working to slow Donald Trump’s attempted takeover of the organization by pushing to keep the committee neutral until Trump is officially the presidential nominee and avoid picking up his legal bills....

athos77,

Elon Musk Matthew enough in a month to pay those bills, and he's fascist enough to do so. But he's also capitalist enough that he'd never do so. Honestly, I expect trump to release another set of fake money laundering cards NFTs any day now.

athos77,

Ugh, I hadn't even thought of that ...

Spez is trying to outfit his doomsday bunker and wants the cash.

athos77,

Yeah, he's going to ask for more. He'll need money for a plane ticket, and a train ticket to the airport, and his mom will find and take the money so he'll need more, and then he'll need to bribe someone along the way, and someone will rob him, and and and and and ...

New Israeli report alleging ‘systematic and intentional rape’ by Hamas relies on debunked Western media reports - The Grayzone (thegrayzone.com)

The contents of the Israeli Association of Rape Crisis Center’s paper alleging “systematic” Hamas rape derive largely from discredited second-hand testimonies and debunked media reports. Among its most heavily cited sources is a dubious NY Times article that triggered a staff revolt at the paper.

athos77,

Media bias / fact check for The Grayzone:

Overall, we rate The Grayzone Far-Left Biased and Questionable based on the promotion of propaganda, conspiracy theories, and consistent one-sided reporting.

athos77,

Or, y'know, instead of racing to post content from potentially questionable outlets, people could wait until it's confirmed by more reputable journalists. Or even just stop visiting questionable sites like this in the first place.

athos77,

Okay, I am not a mod here or anywhere, nor have I been in contact with a mod, nor reported any of your comments. However, I believe that I am the person you wrote that (or another similar) response to.

The original question was something like "Why are people hating on Julian Assange", and I replied something like "Because I found the multiple allegations of rape credible and I don't support rapists". You immediately wrote a long list about how he was misunderstood, it was all accidents, the women weren't reliable, the charges were dropped, the charges were only brought back as political pressure, the charges were only brought because he refused to get an HIV test anyway - honestly, I don't remember, that's just the standard replies I get from Assange fanbois when I say I don't support him.

Someone else asked you for proof of your claims; you wrote another reply with link(s). But someone read the link(s) and pointed out it didn't fully support your claims. They asked for additional information or clarification, and you essentially threw up your hands and said "Whatever, do your own research". And then sometime later, a mod removed your comment with the note saying "Yeah, no evidence".

Again, I had nothing to do with moderating or reporting your comment, but the removal seems to be based on not backing up your claims - "Yeah, no evidence."

athos77,

If there's only one mod, it looks like they took down your comment "2 hours ago", then went back later for a more in-depth review and confirmed to themselves (possibly in response to a complaint from you?) that there was "yeah, no evidence".

there are many downright abusive and rule-breaking comments in that thread that were not touched, btw…

You sound like the guy pulled over for speeding complaining about all the other cars racing past. Occasionally, you're going to end up being the example for other people.

Chief enforcer of US gun laws fears Americans may become numb to violence with each mass shooting (apnews.com)

The head of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says he fears that a drumbeat of mass shootings and other gun violence across the United States could make Americans numb to the bloodshed, fostering apathy to finding solutions rather than galvanizing communities to act....

athos77,

We keep trying, but the courts and legislatures are packed with 2A nutters who believe that "a well regulated militia" means there shouldn't be any restrictions on gun ownership.

The judges were careful to stress that the ruling didn’t represent any comment on the sympathy or otherwise it was reasonable to have for Begum – rather, that there was nothing unlawful in Sajid Javid’s deprivation decision.

Um, that's how an appeal works? It doesn't re-litigate the entire trial; instead, it focuses on whether there were any problems with the system: did the lawyer sleep through the trial? was the law mis-applied? was the defendant coerced into a confession? etc.

Under UK law they're not allowed to remove citizenship if it would render the person stateless. However, when the UK was investigating whether they'd have to take her back (and they really didn't want to), they realized that she [has? is entitled to?] Bangladeshi citizenship, something that neither she nor the Bangladeshi government was aware of. So they stripped her of her UK citizenship and said that she was now Bangladesh's problem. Bangladesh (to put it politely) disagrees, so she remains in a Syrian camp.

athos77,

does that imply that ISIS was actually the good guys?

For me, it comes down to how much damage the group does to the people under it's control. ISIS and the Taliban seem to be rather brutal and repressive to the civilians, especially women: women must wear Islamic clothes, can't go to school for long, can't go out alone, etc etc. Admittedly I'm less familiar with Hamas, but I just haven't seen stories of that kind of brutality from them.

Car manufacturers want to get rid of AM radio, particularly in electric vehicles which produce interference which hinders clear reception. Opponents want to retain AM radio, arguing it's a more effective means of communicating with large numbers of people during and after a disaster. [Don't @me: I don't have enough knowledge to argue either side, just enough to have a vague idea what the debate is about.]

Steele produced an intelligence dossier. It listed facts, extrapolations and rumors and it clearly labeled which items were which. Iirc, the pee tape was listed as a persistent rumor out of Russia that he couldn't corroborate, but that he also couldn't definitely label as false.

Nex Benedict's mom raises doubts about police statements: It's a "big cover" (popular.info)

The mother of Nex Benedict — the non-binary Oklahoma teen who was assaulted in a school bathroom and died the following day — is raising doubts about statements released by the local police. On Wednesday, the Owasso Police posted a statement to the department's Facebook page, which appeared to defend the Owasso High School's...

Judge formally says Trump owes $454 million in civil fraud case, countdown starts for him to put up the money for appeal (www.cnn.com)

A New York judge on Friday formally ordered Donald Trump to pay $454 million, including interest, a move that will give the former president one month to post nearly half a billion dollars to appeal the fraud verdict....

athos77,

No no no. Trump actually provided a list of the New York-based properties* he most wants to keep, we should start with those.

* NY based, because that's where they're run from, not necessarily where they're located. And I think it's a slightly old list because I believe he sold the Old Post Office, but it's still a nice list of initial targets that he'll be most upset by.

The cheapest one is apparently in the town next door. It's a 3 bedroom, 1 bath, 984 square foot single family home built in 1955, on a third-of-an-acre lot with no HOA.

All the pictures are of the outside only, so I'm assuming the inside is pure shit. However, I also have to assume it's some kind of liveable shit, because the places that aren't liveable generally have to list as "0 bedrooms".

It's $60,000, in south/central New Jersey. Or $665 per month, which includes 30 year mortgage as well as property taxes.

athos77,

Did you read the entire article? Because it also explicitly states:

However, the research did uncover a weak relationship between psychopathic personality traits and support for Donald Trump. [...] When examining Dark Triad personality traits, Engelbrecht and her colleagues found that psychopathy showed a significant, albeit weak, relationship with a preference for Trump in the matchups where he was featured. This finding suggests that women with higher levels of subclinical psychopathy, characterized by impulsivity and remorselessness, were slightly more inclined to support Trump, irrespective of the specific electoral matchup.

Which is exactly what the headline says.

At a minimum, it's dependent on who's in office: if they have the info, someone else can come into office and charge you until the statute of limitations expire. And if they decide it's murder, the statute never expires.

athos77,

I watched it last night and the way he was just like, "oh, nice use of ginger", "too much cilantro", and "I can fix this!!" was great! He wasn't focusing on the heat, he was focusing on the taste and it was great!
