Linux file system developer: we're severely under-resourced (lore.kernel.org)

I’ve said this previously, and I’ll say it again: we’re severely under-resourced. Not just XFS, the whole fsdevel community. As a developer and later a maintainer, I’ve learnt the hard way that there is a very large amount of non-coding work is necessary to build a good filesystem. There’s enough not-really-coding work...

Only kbin users are seeing what you see. It looks fine on other Lemmy instances.

Lemmy and kbin do weird things with code blocks. From the source, the post itself clearly only contained backticks. Lemmy sends out marked-up text. kbin escapes it.

Confirmed. I can see the comment on Lemmy but not on kbin.

(you can disable it but you don’t get the space back)

This can certainly be annoying. But if you think about it from a UX perspective, what would happen if you could?

What happens if you disable it, use the space, and then enable it again?

Where does everything go that you placed there?

Does it just shift down? What if it can't because of other content on the page? Do you just shift it to a new page? What if there is content in the way across multiple pages? Does that all get shifted to a jumbled mess on a new page?

What if you just didn't let the user enable it again unless the space was cleared? Would that be too confusing for less capable users?

Sometimes UX designers do seemingly dumb things for very smart reasons.

I used Sync Pro for 10 years. According to my Google Play payment history, I paid $1 for that privilege.

That included at least 1 major rewrite, years of continued support for Reddit and its features, and years of using APIs in-app for all sorts of platforms that probably cost the developer money to use (Imgur comes to mind).

That isn't a sustainable business model.

When kbin support is added, I'll probably grab the lifetime subscription. It's $99.99 for US users. I suspect the € pricing is due to VAT?

Hopefully that makes up for the 70 cents the developer got from me in the last decade.

Witness says Rep. Ronny Jackson handcuffed and 'briefly detained' during rodeo while trying to assist with medical emergency (www.cnn.com)

“He was trying to tell them that he was a doctor and probably trying to tell him who he was, to be honest. And they were screaming that they did not effing care who he was,” she said. “And the next thing I knew, they had him on the ground, grabbed him by the shirt, threw him on the ground, face first into the concrete and...

You aren't going to heat something to 127 °C with an AA battery.

"Room temperature" in this context means "above 0 °C".

Antarctica is missing an Argentina-sized amount of sea ice -- and scientists are scrambling to figure out why | CNN (www.cnn.com)

As the Northern Hemisphere swelters under a record-breaking summer heat wave, much further south, in the depths of winter, another terrifying climate record is being broken. Antarctic sea ice has fallen to unprecedented lows for this time of year.

This is not targeted at you personally. But your post reads very much like stage 1 of alcoholism.

Most people who consume alcohol do not develop alcohol use disorder. But alcohol use disorder still exists.

Most people who consume cannabis do not develop cannabis use disorder. But cannabis use disorder still exists.

The thesis of the article is that cannabis use disorder is not taken seriously, and that people who develop it are finding it challenging to get assistance as a result.

It isn't an anti-cannabis article. It isn't an anti-drug article. It certainly isn't propaganda like Reefer Madness.

And yet most of the comments here are just as dismissive.

If you or someone you love has not personally experienced cannabis use disorder, that's great, and I'm happy for you.

But it still exists, and it should still be taken seriously. There are people out there who otherwise will not get the help they need.

That doesn't mean we have to automatically consider all use problematic, or that all use is inherently harmful.

Gaming disorder is also officially recognized by the WHO and in the DSM-5. That doesn't mean that gaming is inherently dangerous, or that everyone who participates will develop the disorder. But dismissively failing to recognize the significance of it does real harm to those who might seek help.

The market is about to be flooded with Lemmy apps, many of which will be based on former reddit apps. And like it or not, most of these apps do ultimately exist to make money.
