Look like flooding or high water too. No way that tree survives year round in the water like that.

They are speaking truth to power at the moment, but people still play MTX mobile games so…

Publicly traded companies are the root of the issue. Quarterly earnings reports and the related short term profit motive are the worst. Most public stock prices are basically pure speculation, barely better than crypto.

µ-ziq - Live on Resonance (with a different version of Ease Up VIP) (archive.org)

µ-ziq Live on Resonance online radio. Featuring a great version of Ease Up VIP. This would’ve been played around 2003 to 2005 I think, might’ve been before the release of Ease Up. Notice the ending of Ease Up VIP is a bit different from the release version. I think I prefer this version (maybe just because I heard this one...

It feels like the Venetian Snares, but slower ;)

Hey, I mean that as a compliment. I quite like the Venetian Snares. Sometimes ;)

Fair. I probably have causality reversed here :)

troyunrau,

Alright, that is awesome trivia :)

It’s funny how interconnected the industry is. Like, how many people in the ambient space are two degrees or less from Aphex Twin. Or how many IDM albums in the last two decades are two degrees or less from Ultimae… Etc. :)

Hasbro Earnings News (D&D profits) (icv2.com)

Hasbro lost a billion dollars this year, but D&D made a tonne of profit. And they laid off 1100 people. What I can’t understand is how they’re business model works. And how laying off 1100 people will allegedly save $400 million dollar (someone check my math, but does each employee cost 350k+ each?)...

troyunrau,
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s a crazy high operating cost number, if true. Rule of thumb is that operating costs are 25-40% in addition to employee salaries for white collar employees.

I want to like this soundtrack. On paper, it pushes all the right buttons and should be one of my favourites. But in practice, when I’m in shuffle all, I skip these tracks almost every time. My only conjecture might be: lack of dynamic range or something?

Maybe I’m alone on this one and it’s an unpopular opinion.

Why is Discovery just Doctor Who level of “chosen one” plotlines that make no sense?

Federated networks route around the damage. You’re seeing that in action here.

Heh, I got banned from r/onguardforthee, the left-leaning alternative to r/Canada. I had suggested that “not everyone is capable of doing every job, and no matter how hard we try, this will always be the case” – ban message, “ablism”. How the hell are you supposed to have meaningful conversations about politics, progress, and society if the banhammer comes out every time.

Anyway, there !actual_discussion which promises to be diving into the nuts and bolts – we shall see. It’s so hard to be a centrist – you’re never extreme enough for anyone.

Hypothesis tested: critique of Discovery is back on the menu! ;)

One thing that the article ignores is the reason this is so prevalent in Russia and eastern Europe: centralized heating was part of the Soviet housing model, and worked great when everyone was living in the Soviet high density cubicle apartments which made up most of Soviet towns. The losses are lower due to less piping, and the cost of installation is lower due to less piping. It doesn’t play well with the suburban or rural environment in most of Canada.

Furthermore, as the article does indicate, most of these centralized heat plants are fed by fossil fuels. It just kicks the can down the road.

troyunrau,
@troyunrau@lemmy.ca avatar

Maintenance of wires is so much easier than maintenance of pipes. Assuming the electricity is not from a fossil fuel source, distribution of electric heat will almost always be the superior choice (in my humble opinion).

But in many jurisdictions, green electricity is more expensive than fossil fuels. So now you’re looking at pipes to houses to deliver heat, or pipes to house to deliver gas – and the optimization problem becomes less obvious.

In a hypothetical Mars colony where you can clean-sheet design heating and cooling, it’ll almost certainly not be piped centralized heat. And based on the Soviet experience, it probably was never a good choice :/

Please build a giant telescope, and then point it at a black hole about 60ly away, so the light from earth is bent back towards us. Then we can observe this photo being taken in real time. Well, I haven’t done the math on the aperture required, but I’m presuming solar system scale telescope will work… Thx
