My legs is still destroyed after helping a friend to move this weekend

tebrown,

@selea I am too old to help people move anymore. Next time I have to move, I’m hiring someone

tebrown, to random

I thought remotely updating the router was going to be fine.. I was wrong :(

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn it was. All better now though

I really need to figure out how to get a network-cable from the top floor to the basement.

There seems to be no real place to pull it throu,

tebrown,

@selea Do you have central air/heat?

Help me decide what distro to use on my Garage PC.
I'll use it to program chips, mostly ESP32,ESP8266 and similar. Also listen in on radio traffic with an RTL-SDR.

I am defaulting to Debian on this one, if you does not try to convince me to try something else

#linux #askfediverse #askfedi

tebrown,

@selea I run OpnSense and it is BSD based. It does a lot of things well, but driver support is not there for a lot of things (like WiFI). For servers though, it is amazing.

tebrown,

@selea Also, I think Debian it the right choice. If it's powerful enough, run a Hypervisor.

I am not at all motivated when I'm cold.

I fell asleep while I was snuggling under the blankets waiting for the house to heat up after coming home from work. Then I spent an hour being groggy. Washed dishes and now it is time to go to bed.

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn That sounds delightful.

I don't know who wants to hear, but please test your backup. Restore files. How much time did it take? Did you succeed in getting back your data? You are welcome 🤗

tebrown,

@nixCraft CloudFlare should read this.

This seems pretty neat, always wanted to play with an FPGA. I’d really consider buying one if I wasn’t sure it’d just sit on a shelf for the next 10 years.

tebrown,

@paul so much this. If I had an idea for it’d I would definitely get one, but I don’t :(

I think it's an early night for me. A transformer exploded and knocked out power to the city. I have all of my emergency lights packed from moving.

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn you are not in the proper city of Erie, are you?

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

tebrown,

@TechConnectify I gladly pay for premium so I don’t have to see ads. I am glad it supports creators too. That is great to know.

has anyone ever scanned in a QR code from a commercial? I keep seeing the big ugly squares on the screen but I just can't imagine any normal human ever using them

tebrown,

@travis I did once, I think

I HATE painting! Walls are up, paint is done. And I'm done with paint. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=un72XHs8rJs (studio build / moving vlog #7!)

tebrown,

@geerlingguy painting sucks, but plumbing is far worse

I'm glad people had great weather across the Southwest to experience the eclipse today. One of the few times where having crappy weather here doesn't make me feel as bad as I spent the rainy day watching live streams of the eclipse.

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn same. I’m just hoping in April it’s a nice clear day for the total eclipse

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn yeah. I live not far from you in Rochester NY. April is hit or miss.

The other day I got home to my smoke alarms occasionally going off. I eventually discovered two things:

  1. Some newer interconnected alarms flash their power-on indicators after they've been triggered (and continue until you press the test button) so you can determine which one's the problem and

  2. A small spider next to the offending alarm

After... dealing with the spider, the nuisance alarms stopped. I can only assume it kept crawling into the sensor, setting it off, and crawling back out!

tebrown,

@TechConnectify I got a zwave smoke detector and it went off in the middle of the night once. I never hopped out of bed so fast.

Tired: telling everyone you can get a used mini PC that's faster than a Raspberry Pi

Wired: realizing Raspberry Pis aren't impossible to buy at MSRP anymore, and that they have different use cases than old x86 thin clients

I'm here till 9 lol

tebrown,

@geerlingguy The have changed the industry for so much better. I have dozens and they are workhorses!

Among the big automakers, only Ford so far seems willing to meet autoworkers part-way. An agreement with its Canadian workers on pay raises and benefits, as well as the right to strike over closing plants, is a great sign.

GM and Stellantis, this is why you are still faced with rolling stoppages while Ford is not. Time to sit down to talk, then step up to share the bounty with those who made it possible.

tebrown,

@georgetakei when I was younger, Ford was the one manufacturer I wouldn’t buy. Strangely enough, so it is the only “US” manufacturer I will buy from.

Re: my earlier toot.

Honest question - is a "utility room" some sort of Midwestern thing?

Talking about how to avoid running ducts through attics, it occurred to me that it might be.

Here, if you don't have a basement, there's usually a room with your furnace/air handler, water heater, and washer/dryer. Plumbing often routes there, too.

Sometimes it's less of a room and more of a closet, but we can't just stick the washer and water heater in the garage 'cause they'll freeze.

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn @TechConnectify my house was built in the 70s and definitely has a room dedicated for utilities. But this is the north east

tebrown,

@StampedingLonghorn @TechConnectify Oof.. no kidding. My last water heater wouldn't drain and they had to carry it out full. I can't IMAGINE what that would be like in an attic.
