@waldoj @taber This page says Virginia's are the only fully serif license plates in any Western country.

Google is working on a ‘lookup’ button for unknown callers on Android https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/6/24123044/pixel-lookup-button-unknown-callers-gemini-ai-summaries

kcivey,

@verge How often do you get anything useful by googling a number that called? Almost always it's just a bunch of index spam pages full of fake names and addresses. Making it easier to get to that doesn't solve any problem.

genehack, to random

I sat down to throw together a quick blog post with an image dump from my recent NYC trip with @west_winds and somehow there’s no trivial CLI tool to batch web-optimize and resize images that allows you to say “make the bigger dimension X pixels wide and preserve the aspect ratio”? So now I’m gonna be writing something to detect landscape vs portrait orientation.

I swear I wrote this before in, like, 1998, how is this not a thing.

(Also how is ImageMagick still the best tool for this JFC…)

kcivey,
@kcivey@mastodon.social avatar

@genehack @west_winds Why doesn't ImageMagick count as trivial? Isn't it "convert old.jpg -resize 1024x1024 new.jpg" or something? It preserves the aspect ratio by default.

@lauren They may need it for public reach, but they ought to be posting the info somewhere else too.

Journalism observers are saying NBC's craven hiring of Trump world apparatchik Ronna McDaniel "crossed a line" of some kind.

https://www.cjr.org/the_media_today/nbc_hire_ronna_mcdaniel_todd_welker.php

This is absurd. Big Journalism crossed the line in question long ago.

The only difference this time is that a few high-profile media personalities said something about it, publicly.

Even if/when she's kicked to the curb, there will be plenty of right-wing liars on network TV "news" and quoted incessantly in "news" coverage.

kcivey,
@kcivey@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor If NBC dumps her, CNN or one of the others will be happy to pick her up.

Writing a post about the completely-unsurprising demise of Google's Google Pay app in favor of its Google Wallet app--as in, the name it used for its first mobile-payment app in 2011--reminded me of when the carriers were so sure people would instead want to use a tap-to-pay app called "Isis," which remains one of the most unfortunate app-branding decisions of all time.
