fakeman_pretendname,

Now you’ve seen it, it’s your duty to use this in place of “Never going to give you up” by Rick Astley.

No more “rickrolling”, it’s “spockrolling” (or “nimrolling”?) from now on.

fakeman_pretendname,

I’m not sure if it counts as a holiday in the traditional sense, but the plan is that me and the missus are going to both go away on one of those “intensive driving” courses - so I guess it’ll be something like a Premiere Inn in Scunthorpe or whatever. We’ll still be away together though, and hopefully one of us will have learnt to drive (or at least be halfway there) by the end of the “holiday” :)

fakeman_pretendname,

It seems mostly digital/programming/random based stuff from the examples - though by the description above (and wikipaedia’s definition) it sounds like you’d also take more traditional algorithmically generated geometric abstract paintings? i.e. a painting produced following a very strict algorithm/sequence/permutation?

fakeman_pretendname,

Awesome. That’s definitely my kind of thing, and I maybe I can nudge a few folks to post some stuff :)

Oxford shuts down institute run by Elon Musk-backed philosopher (www.theguardian.com)

Oxford University this week shut down an academic institute run by one of Elon Musk’s favorite philosophers. The Future of Humanity Institute, dedicated to the long-termism movement and other Silicon Valley-endorsed ideas such as effective altruism, closed this week after 19 years of operation. Musk had donated £1m to the FIH...

fakeman_pretendname,

I know it’s a stupid, petty thing to get hung up on, but I’m weirdly offended by the word “Center” being used instead of “Centre”, in a British article/newspaper for a British Institute at a British University.

It’s the end of civilisation, I tell you.

fakeman_pretendname,

That’s okay, you can still install Linux on Apple computers 👍

fakeman_pretendname,

It’s not quite as stupid in the article as it sounds in the headline, thankfully.

Going from “all roads in a residential area must be 20mph” to “most of them are, but councils are allowed to switch a couple back to 30mph” isn’t so bad.

We shouldn’t confuse it with Sunak’s fairly recent “I want to ban councils from introducing 20mph zones, bus lanes or low-emission zones” which I still feel is entirely ridiculous.

'They don’t have enough’ – schools in England are running food banks for families as millions struggle to feed their children, researcher says (theconversation.com)

“The peak of the cost-of-living crisis may have passed, but millions of families are struggling to buy enough food to feed their children. Experiencing food insecurity can be deeply damaging for children and negatively affects their achievement at school.,” says Will Baker, Senior Lecturer for the School of Education at...

fakeman_pretendname,

I guess we’re still waiting for it to “trickle down” to us?

fakeman_pretendname,

That’s pretty grim - but on the plus side, it’s got rid of the image of Maggie Thatcher weeing on the rest of us.

fakeman_pretendname,

“Enough of this wishy washy woke looney liberal mental health support nonsense. In the good old days we simply self-medicated with smoking, alcoholism, affairs and domestic violence. It never did us any harm, until we died in our 50s, to the great relief of our long-suffering, abused families”

Good ol’ Tory ‘common sense’ :P

fakeman_pretendname,

In the UK it seems like we only have three channels these days:

  1. BBC iPlayer
  2. Channel 4 On Demand
  3. Piracy
fakeman_pretendname,

The “Fonline” engine fodev.net or fonline.ru was (almost) able to create a fully functional Fallout game, with zoom, higher resolution sprites or isometric 3D models, whilst retaining the look, feel and controls of the originals.

The main problem (from my perspective) was that it was designed as a “multiplayer-first” engine with real-time pew-pew-pew combat, and getting it to do anything singleplayer and turn-based needed quite a lot of work at the time - and engine updates weren’t often backwards compatible, and the documentation was often only in Russian. A lot of half-finished projects showed great promise, but then broke and fizzled out.

I think it’s still in development. Last time I looked, they were “refactoring” all the code (including fixing all the single-player stuff). It still holds promise for the future.

fakeman_pretendname,

I like that there’s a 2000 year old style of artwork which is just historically trolling people with pictures.

“Jan, prithee fetch my giant comb from the random selection of objects I have strapp’d to the wall over there”

“Of course, Samuel! But… what? I cannot grasp the giant comb, it is flat… these objects are all flat”

“Lol”

fakeman_pretendname,

The style of work (which had existed much longer, but was named “Trompe-l’œil” a few hundred years ago, French for “Deceive the eye”) is a style of realistic painting intended to trick the viewer into thinking it’s a real object/room/space.

If you owned one of these in your house, you could troll everyone who visited by asking them to go through the fake door, open the fake curtain, pick up the fake object on the fake table etc, whilst you sat giggling in the corner waiting for them to realise it was merely a painting.

The fact that the room may only be dimly lit by candle or gas/paraffin lamp would help with your deception.

fakeman_pretendname,

Most of them are still just “a picture of a thing”, so you’re probably fine to keep the original opinion in most cases :)

fakeman_pretendname,

These petitions run for 6 months, so there’s a chance this one will be seen by the next government - which is good, because the current lot tended to simply write “no, won’t” on all the petitions they didn’t care about personally.

fakeman_pretendname,

This doesn’t make any sense to me. Does “Liberal” mean something different in America than UK/Europe?

fakeman_pretendname,

That’s awful. Poor bloke. Taking the work back down, filling a couple of holes, painting them and retexturing the wall after - you’d expect them to say “You can take that down and repair it on your lunch break” and just move on.

fakeman_pretendname,

Yeah, but his job was to drill holes in the walls to install artworks all the time, so I imagine it wouldn’t be a big deal to him (and likewise, wouldn’t be a big deal for him to deinstall and refill the holes, as that was also his job).

fakeman_pretendname,

To my eyes, that’s exceptionally well done. I can spend 18 hours on doing something 20 times worse, so I wouldn’t worry about the time it took - rather be impressed with yourself for your ability to stick with it until completion.

As others have said, you’ll learn tricks on the way, so if you make a second and third one, they’ll either be even better, or you’ll finish quicker (and if any bits are reusable with a copy/paste, significantly quicker).

All in all, this is excellent and you should feel proud of what you’ve achieved :)

fakeman_pretendname,

Damn! He’s here?!? RichardRealName is my nemesis!

fakeman_pretendname,

Wigan, North West England. Good at Rugby League and Pies.

fakeman_pretendname,

I suppose any of the games with a good plot and not-so-exciting gameplay - I’d probably go for “To The Moon” and the other ones from that series.

It’s the “RPGmaker” one where the two scientists can go into the mind of a dying person, then change the person’s memories so their dreams were fulfilled and they die happy… assuming the scientists get it correct.

If not the full plot, the premise behind it would make a great series of novels or a TV programme.

fakeman_pretendname,

He seems pretty emotionally fragile - can we pressure him into doing stuff? i.e if people start posting stuff on Twitter, such as:

“I heard Elon musk was too cowardly to go and film the ice wall at the edge of the Earth. I bet he’s one of those lame libtard round-Earthers”

If enough people chipped in, surely we could make this happen.
