    If you host a #GitLab instance, you should update it as soon as possible. There's a critical security update, including a fix for "Account Takeover via password reset without user interactions". Oopsie.

    A cool #nix / #nixpkgs / #NixOS thing: I wanted a fix for a bug in #rofi that wasn't yet in any release. So I generated a patch from the commit with the fix with git format-patch -1, and then added that patch file to my rofi package with overrideAttrs. Boom, the package is automatically recompiled with the patch on the next system rebuild and it just works.

    See: https://git.eisfunke.com/config/nixos/-/blob/33c54c6148886451855c30f922c1a6c8ddd5c4a7/home/desktop/launcher.nix#L6

    We're planning to move to the #Netherlands from Germany next year. If anyone here happens to know of any useful resources or communites (forums, chat groups, discord servers if need be) that might be helpful for us with the job and housing markets or emigration in general, or just job openings interesting employers or anything else, please let me know! ❤️

    More specific info: my girlfriend is a statistician with a recent master's degree looking to work in epidemiology research or something adjacent. I'm a computer scienctist with a hopefully soond finished master's degree and looking to work in, well. Freelancer, maybe? Or type theory research? We're not set on a specific place, but a city not too small or remote would be good.

    I often wonder how certain groups end up associated with certain traits, e.g., BMW drivers and bad parking.

    As a pedestrian, I've taken photos of silly car situations (car parked in between two spots, car causing gridlock, etc.). Reviewing the photos I've taken for the past decade, I just noticed that half of the bad parking photos are BMWs (this is in the U.S. and Canada, where BMW has < 2% market share).

    Why should it be the case that BMW drivers have 25x the base rate of horrible parking?

    eisfunke,
    @eisfunke@inductive.space avatar

    @danluu I'd guess a strong factor with things like that is self-fulfilling prophecy:

    Someone who's considerate in their driving and parking habits might avoid a BMW because of the bad connotations. They might have had bad experiences with BMW drivers themselves, or just have internalized the stereotypes and don't want to be associated with that. If you think of inconsiderate driving and parking when you see a BMW, you won't want others to think that when seeing your car.

    On the flipside, the kind of person who'll park badly might be drawn to exactly those stereotypes. They might want other people to think they're badass or something when they see their car's brand.

    I also have a bunch of packages, modules and adjustments to existing modules in my NixOS config that I'm planning to upstream.

    Contributing to something as big as nixpkgs is pretty scary, maybe now that I've done a first step I'll get around to it.

    eisfunke,
    @eisfunke@inductive.space avatar

    @sandro Why it's scary? Well, a lot of established conventions to think about, a lot of documentation to read, a lot of eyes on you, a lot of polishing I want to do before making a PR. That's a higher barrier to me than quickly hacking something together in my own repo. (Also I can test stuff there and improve it until I think it's ready)

    You don't want mandatory parking areas, you want bike lanes, you don't ever want a truck to stop in the bike lane, and you want to be able to order stuff online and get it delivered. Is that right?

    So yesterday evening I moved my Synapse server from a Docker container to the native module. Dumping/restoring the database and rsyncing the media from the backup took a while. I imported the DB under the wrong name first, and then forgot that Synapse has a hard requirement on the database locale being C, so I had to import it three times...

    Apart from that it went quite smoothly. And it does feel faster now that it's running on the SSD once again.

    While I was at it, I also set up the sliding sync proxy. There's a NixOS module in unstable (as you might imagine, I wasn't very surprised to see that it was written by @SuperSandro2000).

    With that, it was very quick to set up. See also my config repo.

    So I was finally able to try out . It's fast! Yay! Using it is deeply soothing if you're used to the unbearable sluggishness of the current Element.

    X has too many features still missing for replacing Element day-to-day for me, but if they manage to keep it that fast during further development, I have some hope for Element's future.

    (If I were cynical, I would remark here that the current Element app is itself a rewrite of the original app from when Element was still called Riot. IIRC they rewrote it in part because the old app was getting too slow, so they started a faster rewrite from scratch. Which was fast. Well, until it wasn't anymore. I just hope history won't repeat itself there)
