@vathpela @flockofnazguls prosperity Gospel teaches that wealth is a sign of being blessed by God. This is in the water in the US and quite difficult to counter. Merit doesn't really matter. It's sort of like a corrupted version of predestination.

Thank you @RATPAC and everyone that came out tonight to talk about AI/ML in #hamradio. Lots of really interesting stories, achievements, questions, and answers. Video should be up soon and we will have more practical AI/ML sessions in the future.

Have you used #AI #ML in amateur radio? Would you be willing to talk about it? Let us know!

Last week's @RATPAC panel had several memorable quotes that I really hope we follow up on.

The one about professional emergency services people avoiding people and actively discouraging incorporation of hams into plans was hard to hear.

There was a strong consensus that the way forward was "more training" and "appear professional". A quote was "don't show up (to volunteer) dressed like you live under a bridge".

Ironic when #AI advocates assure us safeguards are in place to contain any malicious turn of events — when we live every single day reminded of our impotence to solve the simple questions like, say, how to safeguard ourselves against hackers and spam calls.

Just because people tell you you’re brilliant in one small domain of life, doesn’t mean you aren’t stupid as rocks at all the others. Looking at you, #techbros.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@LeftistLawyer exactly who is assuring that safeguards are in place?

I am a member of the FCC TAC and I co-chaired the Safe Uses of AI/ML subworking group in the last term.

There was no assurances from any of our many industry and academic speakers we scheduled.

On the contrary - they repeatedly emphasized the need for safeguards.

Well, I received a reply to my open letter to the . It was defensive, and said that my call for a position statement on inclusive ham radio was "political" and they would make no such statement.

I need to process and think about it before deciding what to do, but this is disheartening to say the least.

I may just be done with the League altogether.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@bud_t

Thank you for doing this. It is deeply appreciated.

The outcome is not surprising, but very disappointing. Given the negative and uncongenial behavior that many of us have directly experienced from David Minster, Bob Interbizten, Bob Naumann, and others, and no way to enforce any repercussions for crap behavior, it is a better use of irreplaceable volunteer and hobby time if we help each other to fully enjoy radio.

I'd very much like to see the response to your letter published.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@bud_t @bud_t
If folks forgive the technical term, it’s a hysteresis curve at work. The necessary change will take a very large amount of work, over a long time, to achieve the results that we want. What you’re doing - speaking up publicly and clearly from a place of perceived privilege - is very effective. There are some activists that think that the only way to fix equity issues is for the privileged classes to address it. Excluded people don’t have enough power.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@bud_t the lack of inclusion in ham radio is technical debt. A population of people over time borrowed against the fun of ham radio by failing to enforce repercussions for bad behavior. People scattered across time and space borrowed and borrowed over the years, with the damage really not showing up (because affected individuals simply leave) over the decades. It’s been way too late to easily fix it for quite a while. Paying back this particular technical debt will be painful.

@rasterweb I am so glad that brushing my teeth doesn't take 2 hours a night.

Easy doesn't always mean cheap or worthless.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@rasterweb

First, cathexis is nonlinear.

It's not ever the case that simple hard work equals a great outcome.

We clearly see privileged or advantaged people harvesting the work of many others, and benefiting, and we clearly see hardworking people that never get a reward.

We do not have a first order system.

Second, yes. Brushing your teeth with your spit and fingernails only, and maybe some clay and frayed twigs, might take you two hours a day to properly do.

I just got a complaint about my posts, which I concluded came from a troll, but perhaps I’m actually coming off in a way that rubs people the wrong way here.

The complaint was that by posting high resolution images and describing in detail the processes used to create them, I’m merely “showing off” in a way that isn’t useful to most people.

I indeed do rather niche photography, using relatively esoteric gear. I think some people are interested in process and enjoy the results.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@mattblaze yes, people are interested in the process and enjoy the results. Several of us here at our household really enjoy them.

@jeffowski same crap from "foundations" in the non-profit sector that bully and play favorites and cut backroom deals and sneer at the rules. Cultural and ethical breakdowns are unfortunately pretty common.

That's why it's so important to support the people and groups and politicians and leaders that don't break the rules.

I've been told people on this website enjoy me trying to think through computer problems out loud while in incredible pain, so good news: I'm taking my new Thinkpad T14 (https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111218408629532857) out of the box and I'm going to install Linux on it first thing. So expect a LOT of complaining.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@mcc I'd laugh if this was funny.

Hey, give linux a break. It's a brand new OS. Right?

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@mcc I dunno. I have a suspicion that no one in open source really cares about accessibility. It's just not diverse enough. Open source generally does not include anyone that isn't able-bodied, white, male, young, and well-off.

Who else can afford to donate their time?

None of the core dev teams and nearly zero participants at any of the open source conferences I have been involved with have anything other than white men from middle class++ backgrounds.

I'd like to think it didn't matter.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@mcc well, I would. And have.

abraxas3d,
@abraxas3d@mastodon.radio avatar

@mcc the hardest part of any project is never the technical part.
