I’ve had this low-priority to-do in the back of my head for years - “Learn Python”. I’ve just never needed to get across it for any reason when there are other languages I’m more familiar with.

But now my oldest is leaning Python at school. First coding lessons stuff. They’ve got some Logo (the old turtle drawing basic scripting thingy that I learned in the 80’s) module they load and then they’re combining Python and Logo code to draw stuff. It’s actually pretty fun. I find myself debugging his code though. Which is a problem when I don’t know the language syntax.

Watching a complete novice approach a simple problem, I’ve really, really taken for granted how to think like a coder. No wonder people think nerds are from another planet. The problems coders face literally require you to think differently.

So anyway, I’ve started learning Python. I hope I find real uses for it beyond helping the kids with homework.

I took the family there once, back in the day when we basically went to every park everywhere we could find. I remember that place because it was so underwhelming. It looks great on Google Maps, big green open space. You get there and it turns out to be one of the most bland spots in all of Melbourne. We never went back.

You might like Civ IV, it’s square tiled instead of hexagon tiles. I’ve always preferred the squares.

What app are you using? I’ve tested Boost, Sync, Jerboa, Memmy, Voyager and Connect. I can’t reproduce this symptom.

Ya, not seeing this behavior in Connect on Android. Maybe sign out and sign back in again?

I suppose Happy Anniversary aussie.zone is in order. Our mates over the Tasman had theirs a week ago, and they had a cool post of all the exciting stuff that happened in the year. I don’t remember anything, though.

So you guys feel free to reminisce about the neat stuff you’ve seen on Lemmy over the past year and I’ll happily be reminded of all the stuff I’ve forgotten.

You’re right - I probably should make it a post in Meta or something. At 1am though, I was on my way to bed. I couldn’t think of anything to really justify as a post. This thread is where I usually put my little musings.

As for the work, I don’t think either of us would say we do all that much. I sure don’t. I respond to reports, clean up spam and vet the new applications, hoping to keep spammers and bots away. Maybe 10-15 minutes a day, often less.

Otherwise I use Lemmy like anyone else.

I believe it was indented to be.

Do you guys think @Lodion will be mad at me if I let slip that it’s his birthday? 🎂

Nath,

I never thought until now how much of a hassle lockdowns would have been to people who didn’t have a laundry. How did you even cope with that?

Nath,

Oh look! His cake day is his birthday! A day before the instance went “live” to the Internet. Neat!

Would you kindly?

And the realisation that I not only have no choice if I want to progress the plot, but that at no point to now could I have progressed the plot had I not ‘kindly’ done as requested.

It was such a clever device to put in the story. Innocuous or obvious requests at first until it reached a point where you are forced to kill a guy. Or stop playing. It’s the most original and mind-blowing concept I’ve seen put into a game. I still think of it whenever someone asks me to ‘kindly’ do something.

(In case anyone doesn’t know, though I probably just spoiled one of its biggest moments if you don’t)

Apparently, I don’t have enough money in my credit card to pay $0.00 for my kid to go on an excursion:

This is some oldskool software gore content.

Yep. That’ll totally stop 'em leaving.

Tetra packs are 10c to recycle in WA. Not certain of the 1 litre ones, but the kids juice boxes are.

So our public holiday threw my start to the week all askew. I only just checked the AFL tipping results and well, I sucked at tipping last weekend. I only got one game correct. 😞

Went in today to the ABC open house. It was great! Met a few TV and radio presenters. Met the lady who ‘interrupts this broadcast’ to tell people about emergencies. Met Costa (the gardening Australia guy).

Called in while standing in the producer’s studio and saw how they use a literal shared Google doc to communicate with whoever is on air, introducing callers etc.

Stood at the news desk and weather area, taking photos. It was all lots of fun. The kids then watched the news tonight and were super excited at having just been in that studio. It made it all more real to them.

It’s more the idea of Queensland than the reality. Everyone loves the idea of Queensland!

I wish I could manage a rest day. In theory, that was yesterday - but I think a real rest day happens when the kids are at school.

It’s been a long time since I was on minimum wage, but that’s $47.5k / roughly what I was making around 2003-2005 as an IT worker.

Minimum wage has come a long way in 30 years! (No, I couldn’t live on this wage today - depending on how much I’d lose in tax, it might not even cover my rent. But still, minimum wage is pushing $50k!)

33km on the bike as a commute is amazing! I only travel 12km and that is 25 minutes each-way.
Having the energy and commitment to ride 33km at the end of a long work day is very impressive. That has to be over an hour each way.

Happy WA Day, everyone!

Unfortunately, winter arrived in Perth this week and swamped out the city’s planned festival. Honestly, we’ve had showers every day since Tuesday, and the temperature has even dropped below 20° during daylight hours.

At least we have Monday off this week.
