@N3VEM@mastodon.radio

He/Him
Ham radio op N3VEM. Into HF mostly, but also run a repeater, and dabble with rockets a little bit as a cross-over hobby.

#UnitarianUniversalist - Respecter of the living web & justice is for everyone.

Ask me why I don’t own a microwave.

I have a day job, but it's not what defines me - I'd rather talk about #HamRadio, #ModelRockets, #SocialJustice, #Electronics, #DIY, #Making or anything else you are passionate about.

Might swear a little when angry. Sorry.

Mission today - pick up lumber so I can build a ladder and railing for the loft in the playhouse, take 12yo to “Rock Band” practice (something their music teacher does a couple times a year with her students), come home and build said ladder, and maybe do some gardening. I’ll prob have my HT on me most of the day, and will poke around on some repeaters and maybe put out some simplex calls too.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@brainofdane when I traveled a lot for work, is when I had the most variety of simplex contacts - traveling near major metros I’d often drum up some QSOs calling CQ on 146.52. On long stretches of turnpike through rural areas it was usually dead quiet. Locally we also have a pretty committed group of simplex folx, so there is some decent chatter on 146.58 as a result -

Coopnet is back online at the request of my spouse, after being down for awhile. I also have it being served up via my AREDN nodes I’ve been messing with.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@w8cjs AREDN seems ‘fairly’ straightforward so far - in theory you can do anything you could do on the internet, so much more flexible than meshtastic which is just messaging from my understanding. (Although, meshtastic is probably more forgiving as far as propagation.)

At the moment I’m just out of range of the closest cluster of other nodes, so I’m mostly messing around on my own, before deciding if I want to tunnel into them while I wait for enough RF links to pop up.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@lckrohjr @ai6yr @w8cjs very cool on the club - which club are you part of? If some folks set up some nodes I’d be willing to try to point at someone😀.

There is a group over in Montgomery county that has been slowly expending westward, but the closest nodes to me that way are still out of reach via RF.

PS - I used to commute to New Cumberland daily - the company I work for has an office on Limekiln road, just off 83.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@w8cjs @ai6yr @lckrohjr very cool - yeah, they could probably use that existing link and do an AREDN tunnel through it to deal with keeping the part15 stuff separate. If they do end up putting an AREDN node at the SPARC site I could probably hit that - I may run one of those link elevation profile/link quality check things just for fun.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@w8cjs @lckrohjr @ai6yr was browsing around the W3ND website a bit - in theory they could also tunnel through the link they have set up to Cornwall if it’s still active - that’s pretty high and a node there would give coverage to a pretty wide area.

Facts > Feelings

I love it when people correct me if I get my facts wrong. (nicely, of course, LOL!). I love it when people out here know more about a subject than I do. It's AWESOME! So thanks in advance for pointers to references/research/etc. on things.

I realize that a great many people I know (in person) cannot bear to be corrected (even when they are wrong) -- for sake of "saving face". I don't get why that is the case... none of us are infallible. All of us can always learn from someone else.

Anyway, THANKS!

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr ditto here! This is actually my default learning method - try something on my own, screw it up, get advice from someone who knows better😀

I spilled my box of sorted resistors 😩

Sigh. Drywall screws down in the toilet outlet, says the plumber. Which need to be removed before they cause a disaster. Contractor informed. I suppose I should figure out how to clean that out myself given these guys' track record. #disasterremodeling #contractors

@ai6yr lol - I’m so dense - I had my daughter read it for me before I realized you had the English in the alt text 🤦‍♂️

Whoever among the #GNOME devs decided that when you save a file in any program, the active field in the “save” dialogue is “search” rather than “file name under which to save the file “:

Please reconsider.

@slothrop I’ve never complained about this, because I thought maybe I was just inept and I didn’t want anyone to know how much of a doofus I was😀

So - redesigning the ground station for my @RadioRocket. Current version uses an RTL-SDR dongle to receive the APRS packets, making the APRS part of the ground station receive only, which is fine. Trying to decide though, if during the redesign I want to change that to a proper radio so the ground station would also be a digipeater. Basically trying to decide if that would actually net me anything useful.

Looking for recommendations for a wireless charger for an old iPhone. Don't need anything fancy, it's just for my desk at work, so slow is okay.

Anything I should know? (Because, I don't really know anything.) I would like one that works in horizontal and vertical orientation (as shown in the photo).

Any good brands, or brands to avoid?

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@rasterweb how old is your old iPhone? Mine is one version too old to work with wireless charging at all, without putting it in a special case

To make a long story short, we have a pair of roosters that get transported every day to a ‘remote enclosure’ (about a mile away, to my in-laws who are across the township line) where they can make noise all day without drawing the ire of the neighborhood Chads and Karen’s.

I’ve gotten very good at catching and stuffing them into their travel bag for the trip each day.

I suggested that this skill should earn me the nickname of “Cock McStuffins” but my spouse thinks that’s a bad idea…

I was a nerd in high school (I think) and plenty of my friends were ‘nerds.’ How TF did I not end up getting into D&D or other TTRPGs? I get so bleeping jealous when I see people taking about their games and characters - it seems like ya’ll are having a 💩 ton of fun, and I’ve got FOMO.

Built a out of a wheel spoke and some galvanized steel strips. Seems to work OK but I still have weak reception of a repeater that is basically line of sight. Another repeater is full quieting on receive so I suspect a coax or receiver issue.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@dynode oh - I never thought to use that strapping for radials. I have a roll of it that has been sitting around here for ages - I should play around with it to do something along these lines👍

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @dynode yeah - I’d be dubious of the coax as a first stop as well.

Buy 50 cent DVDs from the library book sale pile (for stuff I will watch over and over) sure beats the price of Netflix. The free Blu-Ray/DVD rentals are an even better deal (but requires either muscle power or gasoline for transportation there). I love our library system! #libraries #hooray

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr we borrow DVDs from the library too - the kids have swim lessons on saturdays down the street from the library, so most Saturdays we stop and get/return some books and a movie for family movie night - definitely beats paying for rentals/streaming services

If I put a cylindrical thing onto a shaft thing and then spun the cylindrical thing around on the shaft to sand it would you consider the shaft thing a sanding jig?

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@rasterweb good question - I usually think of a jig as being something that’s more of a guide, that forces repeatability, but your round thing on a stick is pretty close to that, and I wouldn’t know what else to call it😀

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@rasterweb yeah - I guess technically it might count more as a being a mini-lathe

freemo, to random
@freemo@qoto.org avatar

People always frame the question wrong "Is it volts or amps that kill"... its neither, its power.

The only reason amps sorta works is because the resistance of the heart doesnt vary too much from person to person.

N3VEM,
@N3VEM@mastodon.radio avatar

@freemo reminded me of a ‘fun’ thing I did for one of the monthly safety trainings when I was a supervisor of field techs. Not super scientific, but it made the point. I had each of the team members hold a section of copper pipe in each hand, and then we measured the resistance across their arms and chest. Then we used the 30 milliamps that can cause defibrillation as the ‘would probably kill you’ current, and I had them each calculate the voltage that would cause their own death.
