This is one of my all-time favourite #documentaries. It has a bit of a cult following. Was it done weirdly on purpose, or by accident? Serious and hilarious at the same time. Get out the popcorn!

For 21 years I've ran an informative on .

As an "independent source" it was used by politicians, students, and many everyday people alike.

It was used for & , and triggered some inquires where I assisted in shaping national & international political statements. It's been fun & fulfilling 🙂

In today's siloed internet its usefulness is gone. No more days with 5.000 unique visitors & multiple email inquires.

Today is its last day online. 1/2

Overfishing.org contained both an introduction to the issue of #overfishing, and #teaching resources. See attached some evergreens (low resolution, DM me for high res).

There's the "what, why, how" #infographic, #satellite imagery of #BottomTrawling in the Dutch #Waddensea #environment, and a poster with #trawling all around the world.

As I'm #sad to see the website go I've renewed the #domain for one more year and am happy to "donate" it to a good cause. Any interest: DM me.

#ocean #sea

Along the coasts of The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark there lays a shallow coastal sea -with associated wetlands and islands- extremely rich with all types of important sea (it serves as a spawning and nursing grounds for fish) and bird (millions of migratory birds use the mud flats to feed on) life. Large parts of the sea consist of tidal mudflats. The intertidal area is sea during high-tide and dryish land during low-tide. For decades there have been bottom trawling and dredging activities on the Dutch part of the area. As of July 1, 2004 mechanical cockle fisheries have been banned in order to preserve the cockles (and the rich bottom) for the millions of birds. However, some fisheries on mussels (mariculture) and shrimp are still taking place. Here are two low-tide imageres showing the marks / scarves left by various trawling activities. These take years to disappear from visual sight and even longer for the benthic situation to return to the pre-trawling situation. The images are composites from aerial photographs, the location is near the island of Texel.

Modern satellite imagery clearly show the mud trails, distortion and other destruction left by the coastal -shallow water- version of these trawling activities. * trawling imagery from Ecuador, USA (Georgia and Louisiana), Netherlands (Vlieland and Westerschelde), Phillipines, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Mexico. Satellite images are Quickbird, Landsat and aerial photographs.

Response to overfishing.org questions:

-It's on archive.org :-)

Shutting it down as:

  1. in a practical sense, it's invisible on the modern internet. No https and not recently updated. Relevance of content is less than 10yrs ago.

  2. it's hosted by Godaddy; they've massively increased the costs of the "grandfathered" hosting package to 320 euro/year.

  3. It runs on old CRM software*

*if someone does offer (cheap..) https hosting I will consider maintaining a (semi-) static, updated, version.

theotherotherone,

What do you see as the pro's and con's of #documentaries? I'm often not a fan, but want to be. My issues with them, and mostly it comes from I love to learn and want docs to be a starting point, not the end:

  • Credentials of the experts can be spotty

  • No sources given

  • No way to ask follow-up questions

  • Too much theatrics / reenactment

  • Not as detailed as a book

  • Often don't cover the topics I want (social science, #religion, #history, etc)

@theotherotherone @histodons you’re right, you have to invest all your faith in the documentary editor. They have total control over the impression portrayed.

theotherotherone,

@peterbrown @histodons To be fair, the same can basically be said about a single book, too. But it just seems with books, especially scholarly or academic, we're more willing to put some time into researching the author, their biases, and criticisms of the book. With a documentary, people tend to just accept it without any verification.

I'm currently watching documentary Dark Money (2018), about the impact of the Citizens United ruling on US politics and the rise of dark money. If this is a topic that interests you, it's a solid primer on the (complex) subject as well as a well-made documentary.

Currently available free in the US on Kanopy + on other platforms / in a variety of regions.

@deborahh Ah, if you change the country settings on JustWatch.com, it will tell you what's available where you are.

It looks like at the moment Dark Money is only on Apple TV in Canada. https://tv.apple.com/ca/movie/dark-money/umc.cmc.7a897w4affanruaizqsc5i92h?playableId=tvs.sbd.9001%3A1436784981

Is anyone who follows me a fan of documentaries?

I watch some great documentaries as part of my job. It just occurred to me, belatedly, that I should mention them on Mastodon for people who might be interested.

I've been watching Dear Mama, the new Tupac Shakur documentary series directed by Allen Hughes of The Hughes Brothers. It's completely brilliant. Tupac's story is amazing, but the filmmaking is also so strong. The use of music & reworking of the songs to tell the story is so well done. And the perspective rooted firmly within the community that Tupac belongs to is very powerful. No respectability politics, just truth telling. Seek it out.

This PBS one, "The virus that shook the world" is excellent.

Remembered 's exoerience and remembered how apocalyptic things became after a super spreader event that led to a big spike of infection and deaths...

Interesting highlight of the #documentary, "The virus that shook the world", is how the East and West handled the pandemic. An expert commented that the West was gripped by the "cult of individualism". Indeed, I remember seeing what was happening in the West agog. #Malaysians were very compliant, so compliant that they did not protest when Parliament was literally frozen during the lockdowns.

Ukraine: Enemy in the Woods (2024)

This is an unadulterated first person view into the lives of soldiers and a medic (young female vet) on the front lines in Ukraine's fight against Russian forces. Using GoPro cameras and brief interviews off the front line, a unit of Ukrainian soldiers gives a first hand account of life on the front lines. It's a brutal experience that leaves the soldiers on both sides scarred, injured or dead.
