Week one in the new administration in , things are getting a bit concerning. We have on one side opposition parties tried to expand the legislative power
https://mastodon.online/@newbloommag/112497354331258676

And separate China holds large scale military drills

https://mstdn.social/@davidonformosa/112494302145784580

China propaganda machine also putting pressure on Taiwanese entertainers working in China to conform

It's incredibly distracting and overwhelming situation...Taiwan gov should keep their vigilant eyes on all fronts

Apparently the threats to Taiwan by China have ended, for now. #China #Taiwan “China ended two days of war games around Taiwan in which it simulated attacks with bombers and practiced boarding ships, exercises that Taiwan condemned as 'blatant provocation'” https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/china-ends-war-games-taiwan-details-warplane-warship-surge-2024-05-25/

This weekend is perfect timing for the ‘axis of evil’ to exert their power to pursue expansionism. Putin likely told Xi that now would be opportune to threaten Taiwan. #Xi #Taiwan #China #PLO #AxisOfEvil “Not to alarm anyone, but China has surrounded Taiwan with warships and aircraft and the DoD has issued two statements about it over the past hour.” -P McLeary

It took me a while, but I have successfully manipulated China's search engine, Baidu, to acknowledge, "Taiwan independent day" and "Independent Taiwan" without Baidu showing maps of Taiwan incorrectly being included as part of China. 😎

No idea how long it will last, but from America, with love.

(It was not hard. Their search ranks easily and all I needed was a few bots to favor the content I wanted)

#Taiwan's military mobilised forces & said it was confident it could protect the island, after #China started 2 days of #punishment drills around Taiwan in what it said was a response to "separatist acts".
The exercises in #TaiwanStrait & around groups of Taiwan-controlled islands…,come 3 days after #Lai Ching-te took office as Taiwan's new #president, a man Beijing detests as a #separatist.

China, which views democratically governed as its own territory, has denounced Lai's inauguration speech on Mon, in which he called on to stop its threats & on Tues Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called "disgraceful".

Lai has repeatedly offered talks w/ China but been rebuffed. He says only Taiwan's people can decide their future, & rejects Beijing's claims.

An estimated crowd of 30,000 people gathered outside Taiwan's Legislative Yuan to protest against the KMT's attempts to force through legislation that would grant sweeping powers to the legislature and undermine Taiwan's democracy

Frozen Garlic reflects on Tsai Ing-wen's eight years in office with a focus on her relationship with the military

"I think one of the biggest changes over the last eight years has been how the DPP – party elites, party loyalists, and ordinary people with slight DPP sympathies – thinks about the military."

An excellent demonstration of the "rules based international order"

Japan conquers chinese tribunate Ryūkyū Kingdom, then when Japan is defeated, the US draws an imaginary line between #yonaguni and #taiwan ...

#japan #china continued..

To the east of the line, territory can be acquired by conquest, and all conquered "chinese" terrtory is returned to #japan

Sure, #china conquered it from natives in the 14th century or whatever, but no American can begrudge them that and still believe in the legitimacy of USA, amirite.

#japan did great work in suppressing native culture and language and transferring their own population in there so to the victor the spoils i guess!

And Okinawa is a great spot for the US navy, so that's nice

scaramanga,
@scaramanga@union.place avatar

To the west of the line, in #taiwan, territory cannot be acquired by #china (14th century) conquest (or communist revolution) but can be acquired by KMT conquest including massacre of tens of thousands of natives. No problemo!

Certainly no need to revert anything to an antebellum status quo like to the east of the line. Time to move forward and just call an election.

If we apply the same rules in eastern #ukraine? The conquest is old news, what matters is democracy for Donbas, right?

Many details to square away, but No. 1 Offspring, having completed their university degree, and with no immediate prospects for gainful employment beyond McDonald’s, has opted to go live with their grandparents in #Taiwan for up to a year and participate in the government-endorsed (?) Mandarin language learning program.

1/?

LoneLocust,
@LoneLocust@mastodon.social avatar

At age 4 on a 3-month visit to #Taiwan, No. 1 was in a preschool program and, after a couple weeks switched to speaking Mandarin like a light switch was flicked on.

That has long since faded away through disuse, but I suspect, it might come back under immersion conditions with instruction.

In any case, my wife was planning a two-week trip to #Taiwan in October to visit her parents and now, it seems, No. 1 as well.

I guess that means I’m going, too. I haven’t been there since 2019.
