The 13th Floor

MHowell, in Octavia Butler’s Advice on Writing

@Anansi Contrast that with this description of motivation for writing by @pluralistic Cory Doctorow on Writing:

@MHowell asɛnka nni ho! Great read and good points, especially this one:

If you’re a writer or an activist or anyone else engaged in critical synthesis, then the news-stories, ideas, sights and sounds you encounter are liable to tug at your attention: this is a piece of something bigger, and maybe something important.

That tug is the old call of the storyteller - that there is something vital in your words, needed by someone, somewhere, and that alone makes the tale worthwhile to tell.

That groove pops. Speaking of the cats, apparently the extradimensional nature of the @13thFloor combined with frequent visits to the Caravan Palace has resulted in a batch of fall Rift Kittens. They'd like to say Hello, Stranger.

Note that if you visited the Caravan Palace within the last two months, you may be on the hook for child support and/or wanted for questioning in a murder investigation, depending on your activities and your time of visit.

athos77, in The Princess Bride - 1987 - starring Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, Wallace Shawn, André the Giant, and Christopher Guest.

And a note for anyone who missed it, most of the original cast got together for a virtual table read of the script during the pandemic.

[There's also a pandemic home movie version with a whole bunch of actors.]

TIL - thanks! Awesome links!

You can make a TIL post!

SkinnyBob, (edited ) in I was asked to post this here - 'The Battle of Victoria Crater - Part One - by Jackson Allen' is one of my scifi audiobooks - hope you enjoy it! :)

Every time humans get into space, they start squabbling. It’s no wonder your planet is quarantined, you have no capacity to grok each other.

Upvote for accuracy. Signal has been boosted and enhanced, and in appreciation for your work, we’ve taken Jackson Allen off of our weekly harvest schedule.

My pancreas thanks you for your generosity.

Right on - welcome to the 13th Floor! I'm listening through now - you chose perfect imagery to go along with the tale, and have an excellent storyteller's voice. I wanted to mention that we're more than open to self-promotion here, and wanted add the link to your site from the video:

In fact - you've got tons of fine tools and stories there - if you feel like posting up your site on its own thread, please feel free to do so - its great to have your work here!

Thank you! :)

Rolando, in Octavia Butler’s Advice on Writing

That part about having a good work ethic reminds me of a famous Georges St-Pierre quote about training for MMA:

“You don’t get better on the days when you feel like going. You get better on the days when you don’t want to go, but you go anyway. If you can overcome the negative energy coming from your tired body or unmotivated mind, you will grow and become better. It won’t be the best workout you have, you won’t accomplish as much as what you usually do when you actually feel good, but that doesn’t matter. Growth is a long term game, and the crappy days are more important.”

Ok, I gotta give you real props for this submission. This gets weirder the further you go down the road. Right now I'm in Blythe, CA:

The Tropics of Blythe raises some mysteries. No such place exists today, and that’s hardly a surprise; your chance of coming across a motel with a big A-frame lobby AND and an adjacent Sambo’s are as likely as finding a two-headed jackelope.

Then there's that little elfin fellow. That's Ken Kimes, motel developer. Therein hangs a tale. New York Times:

While living in Mexico City in 1985, Ms. Kimes and her husband were arrested on slavery charges after several of their maids complained to the Mexican authorities that they had been beaten and imprisoned in the Kimes’s house. Ms. Kimes served five years on the charge (Mr. Kimes served three), and when the couple was reunited with Kenneth Jr., the family embarked on itinerant journeys to Hawaii, Europe and the Bahamas.

It was not long after the senior Mr. Kimes died — of natural causes — in 1994 that people in the orbit of Ms. Kimes and her son started disappearing.

Murder followed. Read it all here

While the link on the site was dead, I tracked it down and found it not to be just a crime article, but a crime novel with 16 chapters.

Bravo, sir - you win this week's wormhole to what the holy hell award, hands down.

@Arotrios ha just saw this comment. Excellent sir, glad you appreciate it as much as I do! The American Motel has been haunting me for years; I hoped it would fit right in here.

amg93, in Writing Down the Bones - Natalie Goldberg - 1986

@Arotrios Love, love, LOVE Writing Down the Bones. With insightful and easily digestible chapters, it's a golden guide to becoming a better writer. I reread it every couple of years or so.

Rolando, in High On Mel - Shamanic Tales - Astrix - 2013 - GetAFix Video and Remix

Astrix is awesome. His set at the 2019 Ozora Festival is one of my go-tos when I need music to work to.

Holy shit - this rocks - fantastic set!

A blessing upon @TheMetalDog, for he is blessed with wicked taste, and has a thrashin' ride awaiting him at the pearly gates for sending forth this track.

koteisaev, in Meet Anansi - the West African trickster God who inspired Br'er Rabbit, and is canonically confirmed as the first Spiderman, avatar

@Arotrios "Anansi is a spider god and a charming trickster" - it reminds me what I read about spirituality of Lakota people. They mention a spider god, trickster, even may be less charming, who was first responsible for wisdom and had related Ksa title, but has been stripped that tittle eventually for unethical behavior, and become responsive for what I can call "pseudo-wisdom".

Arotrios avatar

@koteisaev You got me curious (I love discovering old gods) - Iktomi is pretty cool - thanks! Some of the footnotes there are sending me in search of his tales.
