of course my car decides to start throwing Engine Malfunction messages and randomly going into limp mode on the Sunday immediately before the bank holiday Monday when I'm meant to be driving to EMF, meaning I can't get it to a mechanic for diagnostics let alone a repair in time.

OBD-II scanner shows nothing at all, inbuilt test mode shows two generic DTC codes that provide no useful information other than it's maybe a sensor doing something wrong.

ffs.

I am remarkably nervous about this.

@gsuberland that breaks my brain. Why would serial data be connected to serial clock and vice versa?

Is it the cesspool I imagine it to be?

[serious, no joke replies or guesses / autotranslation please]

do I know anyone native or otherwise very fluent in Chinese who can tell me the correct term for a plated edge connector, like you might find on a PCIe card? specifically the "gold fingers" style connector feature you would find on the PCB side, not the plastic connector it slots into.

I've had an absolute nightmare trying to communicate this feature to a Shenzhen-based PCB vendor and I would like it to be easier in future.

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland wanted to help, but my wife doesn't know (she's native). The only thing she could think of is 插口 (cha'kou) which literally means socket - and that's not what you're looking for.

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland you didn't - I did respond with what my wife said (and she's as Chinese as they come :) ). I didn't find you grumpy - and I understand where you're coming from. Chinese as a language can be unbearably frustrating at times...

discovering that fewer cybertrucks have been sold than Sinclair C5s has amused me greatly. and honestly, if you want to drive a weird vehicle, the C5 is far more fun.

@gsuberland I honestly do want a C5 more than any other vehicle. I grew up with all stuff Sinclair (first 4 computers were all Sinclairs) and throughout my teens and late teens he (Sir Clive) was my hero :)

kinda pissed off at FS (the networking company) who try to sidestep the whole "it's not legal to send you marketing emails without an opt out" thing by assigning everyone an account manager (read: marketing intern) from whose email marketing emails are sent.

normally it gets auto filtered into the marketing folder anyway but occasionally one gets through to my main inbox, and today's was some shite about LLMs, so I finally replied and told them to fuck off.

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland you need a dose of our marketing laws :) Here you have to opt-in to get marketing emails - unless - you are already a customer (and a current one at that, a former customer is automatically exempt from marketing).

IF I get a call, my first question will be "Where did you get this number, did you know I'm on a no-call list and what is your name? Now connect me with your manager so I know who to sue."

I usually get a "OMG so sorry! <EOT>"

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland marketing emails and phonecalls are bundled into the same law here (lazy goodness?) but I like the hefty fines. I don't know of a single company here that has actually been fined even if the law allows for it...

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland that explains why the only scam calls I get are from +44 ;) They've found new pastures to graze in 🤭(my old phone had about 50 UK phone numbers blocked :) )

@gsuberland Take a trip to Spitsbergen at wintertime. 🙂

thor,
@thor@mast.ttk.is avatar

@gsuberland aurora spotting is best done in the coldest months, nighttime (past 22:00) and outside city limits. Of course a clear sky is a must too :p

But polarbears... , a tidbit - in Spitsbergen it is generally advised not to walk outside without a firearm. And since Spitsbergen is farther north than even north Norway, chances of catching both aurora borealis and a polar bear in the same frame are pretty good :)

My email inbox at work is full so I can't send any email, to the point where I had to contact help desk to see if there were any options for archiving or making my inbox bigger, and I understand why they have to ask this kind of thing but...

When they said "Have you tried emptying your deleted emails" I sighed out loud

thor,

@JenMsft When I was working as a sysop (in a different life) one customer called me because his pop account didn't work anymore. These customers were "no quota" customers. Upon checking his account, I found that his mailbox was several gigabytes. Apparently he didn't trust the backup measures in place, and as such, emailed himself each and every revision of each and every document that he created.

I'm setting up my son's belated Yule-gift, a desktop PC. And one of the things he's learning at age 8 in school is video making and stop motion. So, I install a stop motion studio and then I wanted to install a video editor - and obviously, as I have M365, I chose ClipChamp.

Well deleted! This is my error. "Clipchamp is not available to you due to age restrictions in your country or area"

@shanselman @JenMsft - who can I pester to know why there's an age restriction on a video editor?

One Windows update question

If I have disabled "Get the latest updates when they are offered", should I then be getting "Update Preview" ?

@JenMsft

thor,

@JenMsft no, that update came and installed un-requested.

After that I checked for updates and installed the optional 23H2
