spiders

Today I learned that #spiders can use electric fields to propel their silk strands through the air, allowing for longer flights than wind alone would provide.

I was stunned and amazed.

And then I remembered that spiders have been evolving for more than three-hundred million years. Their super-powers should come as no surprise to anyone.

@Gustodon Ooh, that has potential for some rather juicy conspiracy theories! :)

Are superintelligent spiders secretly controlling our brains with their electric fields? How can we be sure one way or another?

Were the tinfoil hat wearers right all along? o_O

Spider trifecta complete. If you see one of these, might I suggest grabbing something with a loooooooong handle.

@shekinahcancook They eat spotted lantern flies and cockoaches, so you might want to be nice to them, actually

There are lots of clickbait-y stories circulating about the invasive Joro spider.

For context, Joro spiders are shy, harmless to humans, and they eat many common flying insects, including mosquitoes, lanternflies, and stinkbugs.

In the eastern US, you're likely to see their webs on power lines. You are NOT likely to see them hanging out on your hand.

I live in the region where these have spread, just north of Atlanta. And I’ve watched them spread dramatically over the past 5-6 years. It’s true, they are timid and don’t seem to bite, but their webs are Everywhere in late Summer until frost. They spin webs vertically between tree branches, sign posts, lamp posts, and hang out in the middle. Hiking in the woods has gotten a LOT more interesting as they’ve spread, and you avoid it at night. I’ve gotten a face full more than once.

I didn't really want to know this. Yes, spiders are good neighbors and helpful and all that. But...I don't want them landing on me. Just saying.

A pair of eyes that say "please don't crush me"

and also a second pair of eyes

and also a third pair of eyes

I'm not sure who this guy is, on first sight I thought it might be a pseudoscorpion, but on closer inspection it does not appear to have pincers - so it seems to be some kind of spider.

Another photo of the same spider from a diagonal angle, showing four eyes and the front legs, which are quite beefy. The spider is dark colored and standing on a wood table. Most of the body is blurry and out of focus.
A side view of the same spider. This shows that the body is elongated and dark and has a few bright yellow spots on the side.

Wait in entomology school do they really cover the "many theories" about what would happen if "the insect world turns on man?"

New jumping spider! Sitticus palustris and Naphrys pulex are the closest options in my spider book, but I'm not sure. I often see P. audax and Platycryptus in the house, but these little brown ones stick to the lawn.

I believe this bold jumping spider made a hideout in my portable solar panel while it was folded up. Is this just their bed where they were sleeping, or did they put eggs here that will hatch? In other words, can I safely clean this construction off now that the spider is out and about, or does my solar panel need to live outside now so baby #spiders won't take over my house?

A webby pouch attached to the cloth of my little Anker solar panel. It looks like it opened one side so it could leave.
